Just a quick scroll of my personal Instagram page and I am inundated with over half a dozen alluring posts declaring the powerful health benefits of turmeric. It has played a major role in Eastern medicine for thousands of years and now along with showing up more frequently on my social media feed, it's becoming prominent in supermarkets and research journals worldwide. But is it really a magical super spice or just the latest health food fad?
What is Turmeric?
If you like Indian food, you’ve probably been eating turmeric regularly. It’s a vibrant yellow-orange spice and a main ingredient in curry, it also gives mustard its golden colour, and is closely related to ginger and has a bitter flavour.
It has been celebrated for centuries in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine for its powerful health benefits. Derived from the root of the Curcuma longa plant, turmeric is not only a flavourful addition to your meals but also a natural remedy that can improve overall health.
Research on its health benefits is still in the early stages, but evidence is building for some popular claims. If you like natural products that can enhance your wellbeing, here are some of the ways turmeric can boost your health:

*Curries and Soups ~ Turmeric adds depth and warmth to savoury dishes. Combine it with black pepper, as the compound piperine in black pepper enhances curcumin absorption by up to 2,000%.
*Rice and Quinoa ~ Sprinkle a teaspoon of turmeric into your cooking water for a vibrant and nutritious twist.
2. Sip on Turmeric Tea
*Combine 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder with hot or warm water or milk (dairy or plant-based) and a dash of black pepper. Sweeten with honey for a soothing drink.
3. Make Golden Milk
*A popular Ayurvedic remedy, golden milk is made by simmering milk with turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and honey. It’s a comforting and health-boosting beverage.

*Mix turmeric with honey and yogurt to create a natural face mask. Apply it to your skin for 10–15 minutes to reduce redness and promote a radiant complexion. Be cautious, as turmeric can temporarily stain the skin.

*If you’re looking for a higher dose of curcumin, consider turmeric capsules. Look for supplements with added black pepper extract for better absorption.
Some Tips for Using Turmeric
Start Small ~ Turmeric has a strong flavour, so start with small amounts and adjust to taste.
Use Fresh or Powdered ~ Both forms are beneficial, but fresh turmeric root has a more potent flavour.
Store Properly ~ Keep turmeric powder in a cool, dry place, and refrigerate fresh turmeric root to extend its shelf life.
Safety Issues
While there appears to be little risk when using turmeric in the traditional ways, eating, drinking and applying it to your skin, stay alert for any side effects. Although turmeric is generally safe, excessive consumption may cause side effects.
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhoea, and upset stomach. They occur mostly in those who are sensitive to one or more varieties of curcumin or those who use turmeric in large amounts over a long period of time.
There are also certain conditions that make it inadvisable to use turmeric. This includes being pregnant or breastfeeding or having gallbladder issues. If you're having surgery, stop taking turmeric at least two weeks in advance because it may interfere with blood clotting, stomach upset or interact with certain medications, such as blood thinners.
